(MANOR, TX) September 19, 2016 – Over 20 participants from the International Visitor Leadership Program toured Manor New Technology High School to discover how students are engaging in STEM coursework through the New Tech Network model of project-based learning. The group of CEOs, non-profit founders, and other public and private sector leaders began the day with an overview of the core tenants of the New Tech model, which include an emphasis on 21st century learning outcomes such as oral communication, collaboration, and agency. Afterwards, two 12th graders took guests on a guided tour of the campus, where they saw students constructing towers, shooting videos on iPads, and leading discussions with their peers. The visit concluded with a debrief meeting, where the GlobalAustin participants shared what knowledge and best practices they planned to take back to their respective countries, which included Finland, Uganda, and Beirut.
When asked to share his goals for the campus, Principal Bobby Garcia responded, “I am most proud of getting students who may not have gone on to college to pursue higher education.” While he knows that not all students will go on to become engineers and scientists, Garcia noted that his students are successful in college because of their strong foundation in 21st century skills, citing the approximately 79% post-secondary persistence rate for Manor New Tech graduates.
